Getting Vaccinated Really Have Precedence Over A Proper...

Does getting vaccinated really have precedence over a proper education? Currently all fifty states require children to be up to date on all vaccinations to enter kindergarten (â€Å"What Would Happen†). Alice Park, a reporter for Time, reported, many parents disagree with mandated vaccine and refuse to vaccinate their children on religious or philosophical grounds. However, vaccinations help build immunity and prevent many deadly diseases. Park noted that religious and philosophical waivers make the herd-immunity effect less effective. Park explained that the herd-immunity effect takes place when the upper majority of a population is fully vaccinated, covering those who did not or cannot get vaccinated, like cancer patients and newborns who†¦show more content†¦However, these parents are underestimating how many other parents have the same idea. An increasing problem is that people assume that everyone else vaccinated their children. In reality, a minority large enoug h to start an epidemic are not vaccinating their children. Park estimates if all children received the recommended vaccinations from the time they were born to adolescence $10 billion in medical bills would be saved, 14 million infections would be avoided, and 33,000 lives would be saved (Park). The issue is, critics believe these numbers do not apply to them. Critics believe their child’s infection could not have been avoided, and, potentially, life could not have been saved if they did vaccinate their child. Many people who are a part of the mandated vaccine debate are wondering, what would happen if more and more people stopped vaccinating their children. This actually happened in Japan in the late 1900s. The CDC report â€Å"What Would Happen If We Stopped Vaccinations?† states that â€Å"[in] 1974, about 80% of Japanese children were getting pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine† (â€Å"What Would Happen†). There were 393 cases of whooping-cough reported and zero deaths. Ten years later, the amount of children vaccinated dropped to 10%. That year 13,000 cases of whooping-cough were reported and 41 deaths. Soon people started to vaccinate their children and the number of deaths dropped (â€Å"What Would Happen†). These deaths could have been prevented if their

The Features of Faithful Womens Life - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 3 Words: 974 Downloads: 5 Date added: 2019/03/22 Category Religion Essay Level High school Tags: Faith Essay Did you like this example? There are a myriad of women, all different ages, who are exceptional leaders. They are especially leaders in the sense of their teachings of how to live life filled with faith and love. Two notable women who lead their lives with God include Mary Magdalene and Lady Gaga. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "The Features of Faithful Womens Life" essay for you Create order For instance, Mary Magdalene appears in the bible multiple times as an extraordinary woman who gives up her life to love and praise Jesus. In the bible, she is portrayed crying over Jesuss tomb and at his crucifixion. She was one of the women who witnessed the angel who told her that Jesus had risen. She was a profound follower of Jesus who is also remembered by kissing his feet and washing them. Many people are most surprised to learn that nowhere in the Bible is Mary Magdalene described as a prostitute. However although not written in scripture, the reputation does have church support. Pope Gregory I delivering a sermon that technically stated that Mary Magdalene probably had that job. Indeed, then Mary has more often than not been represented as a prostitute who gave up her awful ways to follow the savior, Jesus. This sometimes allows a powerful positive effect on women and the image of God being forgiving. Regarding Marys time period, her personal life did fit the time era however once she followed Jesus she was known as a radical. We can learn from Mary Magdalene that Jesus always gives peace of love. We must remember to be persistent in faith no matter what sins have occurred and we can learn to spread the gospel. One contemporary leader that reflects Marys actions would be Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga is similar to Mary Magdalene through numerous aspects of her life. One example of this is her persistence of faith. Lady Gaga grew up very Catholic and seemed to have always kept that close to her heart. She has always preached the word of God to her friends and fanbase, no matter what others thought of her, especially paparazzi or news crews. This is similar to Mary following Jesus no matter what everyone thought of her. Another instance of their similarities include the fact that Mary has a reputa tion of being used by men. Lady Gaga had struggled with sexual assault only as a teenager. Although this tested her faith she stuck with Jesus and knew that He would always be there for her. This is something Lady Gaga has addressed and proudly stated to many. Lady Gaga even mentioned Mary Magdalene as an inspiring leader to her. An article called When Celeberties Share Their Faith, shared their thoughts of faith filled celeberties by saying, Many celebrities are sharing Bible verses, quoting priests, and singing Christian music while at the same time still leading a typical Hollywood lifestyle void of Christian values such as modesty and purity. Lady Gaga wisely defended herself by posting on social media, Mary Magdalene washed the feet of Christ and was protected and loved by him. A prostitute. Someone society shames as if she and her body are a mans trash can. He loved her and did not judge. He let her cry over him and dry his feet with the hair of a harlot. We are not just celebrities we are humans and sinners, children, and our lives are not void of values because we struggle. We are as equally forgiven as our neighbor. God is never a trend no matter who the believer. I think this illustrates Lady Gagas values perfectly. Her whole act of wearing crazy clothes or costumes is solely to show that even at her craziest she is loved by God. The differences between Lady Gaga and Mary Magdalene include that Lady Gaga obviously is a performer and she has started several charities for sexual abuse, which Mary did not especially in that timer era. A few bible verses that initially described Mary, also stood out to me that they perfectly described Lady Gaga. This includes one from Mark 15:40, There were also some women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James. While many of the disciples of Jesus, like Peter, were quick to leave Jesus, Mary stayed and followed Christ no matter the cost to herself. This reminds me of how although Lady Gaga is always criticized for being faithful and a pop singer, she still sticks with Jesus and defends herself. Another bible verse is from Luke 24:1-3, But at daybreak on the first day of the week [the women] took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. Mary could have stayed home and mourned or even waited until later to bring the spices to the tomb, but Mary had a servants heart. She rose the earlies to serve Christ and honor him. This again is similar to Lady Gagas persistent faith and honoring him the best way she knows how. The last bible verse is from Luke 24:6-8, Remember what he said to you while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners and be crucified, and rise on the third day. And they remembered his words. Mary never question Jesus and she immediately went to tell the disciples what she had seen and heard. Lady Gaga too never questioned Jesus although she was tested by her sexual assault. She still became even stronger than ever. In conclusion, although there are many differences between Mary Magdalene, the biblical leader, and Lady Gaga, the pop performer, they still both keep God the center of their life. Thus, this inspires many to keep God the center of every relationship or activity.

Imagery in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Free Essays

What Mark Twain is trying to portray in this part of, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, is that Boggs is plainly looking for trouble, and Colonel Sherburn is as well. In this part of the book, Boggs comes galloping along on his horse, to town where he wants to kill Sherburn. His motto, â€Å"meat first, and spoon vittles to top off on† (107) is referring to him killing Colonel Sherburn and then eat him up in a sense of having pride that Boggs defeated someone. We will write a custom essay sample on Imagery in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn or any similar topic only for you Order Now When I was reading this part of the novel, I pictured Boggs as a mid-aged, really large man. Also, the book said he had a really red face so it made me picture him getting out of breath easy. Losing his breath foreshadowed a bit to me that he was the one that was going to be defeated, being â€Å"weak†. As Boggs was trying to act strong and brave, it turned out that Sherburn was the brave one, I pictured. Sherburn seemed like he just walked out of the store in Arkansas in a brave matter, with no care in the world after he gave that speech. Colonel Sherburn seemed sick of Boggs running his mouth, and so he shot Boggs multiple times. The word â€Å"bang! kept appearing in this chapter, and it showed me how Sherburn wanted to do what he thought was necessary, though he was frustrated a bit. What really caught my eye was when they were trying to keep Boggs alive, and they put a Bible over his chest and under his head. This made sense that they thought, through their religion, that that could help Boggs out and that the Holy Spirit would bring him back to life, but unfort unately they did not. When first reading this, chills were brought to me with the smell of really fresh air and the sound of huffing and puffing as Boggs kept gasping for that sweet air. A.T. Kearney Sales Management Essay Example

A.T. Kearney Sales Management Essay A. T Kearney and the new â€Å"defining entity† Background: â€Å"No longer is IT just another tool the CEO might use to accomplish costs saving and operational ends. Today, information technology can help solve product problems, set new levels of service and create new distribution and communication channels. † Founded in 1926, A. T. Kearney had evolved into one the world’s dominant management consulting practices. Its approach was to develop realistic solutions and help clients implement recommendations that generated tangible results and improved competitive advantage. The mix of strategy and operations had differentiated A. T. Kearney from its competitor’s and driven the firm’s outstanding results. A. T. Kearney had doubled its size every three years since 1983 and was recently listed in Consultants news as one of the five fastest-growing consulting firms in the world. EDS started in 1962 with Ross Perrot and $1000 dollar investment. It helped customers use information and technology to recast their economics and to identify and seize new opportunities. Considered by many to be the inventor of â€Å"outsourcing,† EDS had established itself as a world leader in information technology services. EDS defined its business as â€Å"shaping how information is created distributed, shared, enjoyed, and applied for the benefit of businesses, governments, and individuals around the world. † Its service offering included four different types of products: Systems Development, Systems Integration, Systems Management, and process management. EDS later entered the management consulting industry as part of a strategy to offer business solutions rather than simply IT solutions to its customers. We will write a custom essay sample on A.T. Kearney Sales Management specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on A.T. Kearney Sales Management specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer EDS eventually formalized its efforts of management consulting by creating MCS which leveraged its tradition and strengths, MCS brought a new dimension to EDS. Over a short two-year period, EDS had built MCS into an organization of 1,300 people, with 30 offices in 20 countries. Competition for both firms revolved around the big six classic IT firms who were enjoying annual growth rates in excess for 15 percent as IT became increasingly strategic in nature and instrumental for reengineering. Operation and Strategic Firms, who were best known for their strategic expertise, were broadening their service fferings as they moved aggressively downstream into operations consulting. Systems Integrators and Systems Vendors had moved to more traditional management consulting markets and new information technology entrants that spotted the opportunity to consolidate client relationship by selling â€Å"upstream† consulting services on top of their core outsourcing and system integration s kills. Because of intense competition and extensive opportunities, EDS acquisitioned A. T. Kearney Ltd. in order to provide is a full service company. Despite amazing growth in the first year, the â€Å"new entity† had problems in leveraging the two companies, and jumping on these new attractive opportunities. However, the acquisition also raised many issues. Among these was the issue of how to leverage the merger in terms of providing strategic consulting and information systems solutions to clients. There’s also the issue about the ability of these two very different organizations, with different skill sets and cultures, to work together in blending their services into a broad, seamless continuum. Should the two firm’s cross-sell each others services? Should A. T. Kearney call on existing ED’s clients and vice-versa? Should the two firms work together to secure new clients? Sales management issues arising from this decision. For example, if cross-selling is to be encouraged, what incentive scheme might be appropriate? Strengths: * Successful merger between EDS and A. T. Kearney * World leader in Information Technology services * Offer services from systems development to Consulting services * Companies are very well known world-wide * Well positioned in the market place * Unparalleled spectrum of capabilities to clients Steady growth * â€Å"One Stop Shop† * Broad Range of services * Well matched for both A. T. Kearney and MCS. * Strong goals of growth, globalization, and leadership. Weaknesses * Leveraging and combining each other’s strengths in the marketplace * Merging of two entirely different cultures * Fear that A. T. Kearney would be viewed as the front end for EDS * Merge not working out among employee s * May be difficult to attract and retain good people * Consulting vs. Systems * Un-established environment where the two companies could remain apart, but at the same time work together. Sales and account management Opportunities: * Draw on the strengths of both organizations and develop entirely new products. * Full service firm * Technology being integrated into business strategy * A lot of growth potential * Technological Investments will increase * Substantial cross-marketing opportunities * Host events where employees from both organizations attend Threats: * Competitors becoming full service * Political and legal policies affecting the merge * Competition from other firms * The â€Å"Big Six† – Classic IT firms * Operational and Strategic Firms Systems Integrators and system vendors * New information technology entrants Recommendations: Cross-Selling will be strongly encouraged in the company by giving incentives to the sales teams of both companies. In additio n, the company should train a middleman between the two services. Train employees in cross-selling techniques. The approach must be built around serving the customer, not just selling more stuff. For example, you might describe how the additional products or services would complement the original purchase and further solve the customer’s problem. Be on the same payroll, their pay depends on the other company. Basically, there should be consultants from A. T. Kearney, who are involved in the creation of the IT programs from EDS. The two firms should work together to secure new clients. Essentially, whether the client from A. T. Kearney or EDS. A. T. Kearney will encourage the client to buy the software and services from EDS or EDS can ask the client use A. T. Kearney consulting services or they can also make it a package deal. In order to do so there’s a need to establish consistent forms of communication  with various layers of management. Setting up a communication program that includes a comprehensive list of employee groups within the purchasing and selling organizations; a very specific timetable for addressing each group; tools and forums to be used in communicating to each group; and deadlines for developing content and producing material, along with the individuals charged with accomplishing these tasks. There should be clear communications to  all  employees,  the expectations for working in the post-transaction environment. They should, therefore, hear the same message from management so that all employees are singing from the same prayer book.    Ideally, members of a companys executive team should initially address all employees directly. On a follow-up basis, however, managers should be reinforcing the big picture painted by senior officials while focusing on specific actions expected of employees under their supervision. To ensure these follow-up communications are consistent in their message and reflect top managements expectations for employee action, a company-wide communication plan should be in place. Overall controls on the type and content of the communications could range from providing managers with content outlines and/or key talking points, to centralized development of the presentation material itself. Listen to the views and concerns of all employees  regarding work in the new environment. Overall, the newly formed company must work hard at finding a blend of corporate practices and procedures from operations, sales and R;D to finance, management systems and the use of capital and human resources that best suits its planned goals and objectives. Reason for Recommendation: If two firms were to create a new environment that can work for both organizations by communicating, it will provide both firms with optimum advantage. Benefits from the blend will include: keeping as many clients as possible, getting some more and most importantly, have a good and efficient organization, not just to the eyes of the clients, but also to the new inner structure that the company will have. The entity can host event for the employees to get to know each other this way EDS employees can refer clients to a specific A. T. Kearney consultant or perhaps have both work together, even introduce the A. T. Kearney consultant to the client and visa-versa. In order to encourage this, the company can provide incentives for cross-selling, or they can. For the vendor, the benefits are also substantial. The most obvious example is an increase in revenue. There are also efficiency benefits in servicing one account rather than several. Most importantly, vendors that sell more services to a client are less likely to be displaced by a competitor. The more a client buys from a vendor, the higher the switching cost

Realigning Elections in American History

Realigning Elections in American History Since the stunning victory by Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 United States Presidential election, the discourse around words and phrases such as â€Å"political realignment† and â€Å"critical elections† have  become more commonplace not only among  political analysts but also in mainstream media. Political Realignments A political realignment occurs when a particular group or class of voters changes or in other words realigns with a political party or candidate who they vote for in a particular election – known as a critical election or this realignment may be spread out over a number of elections. On the other hand, â€Å"dealignment† occurs when a voter becomes disenfranchised with his or her current political party and either chooses not to vote or becomes an independent. These political realignments take place in elections involving the U.S. Presidency and the U.S. Congress and are signified by power changes of the Republican and Democratic parties that constitute ideological changes both issues and party leaders.  Other important factors are legislative changes which affect campaign financing rules and voter eligibility. Central to realignment is that there is a change in voter’s behavior. 2016 Election Results In the 2016 election, although Trump is winning at the time of this writing the Electoral College by a margin of 290 to 228 votes; Clinton is winning the overall popular vote by more than 600,000 votes. In addition, in this election, American voters gave the Republican Party a clean power sweep – the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives. One key to the Trump victory was that he won the  popular vote in three of the so-called â€Å"Blue Wall† States: Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan.  Blue Wall States are those who have solidly supported the Democratic Party over past ten or so presidential elections. With respect to the electoral votes:  Pennsylvania has 20, Wisconsin has 10, and Michigan has 16.  Although these states were essential in propelling Trump to victory, it is important to note that his margin of victory from these three states totaled approximated 112,000 votes. If Clinton had won these three States, she would be the President-elect instead of Trump.   In the ten Presidential elections prior to 2016, Wisconsin had only voted Republican on two occasions – 1980 and 1984; Michigan voters had voted Democrat in six straight Presidential elections prior to 2016; and as well, in the ten Presidential elections prior to 2016, Pennsylvania had only voted Republican on three occasions – 1980, 1984 and 1988. V. O. Key, Jr. and Realigning Elections American political scientist  V.O. Key, Jr. is most well-known for his contributions to behavioral  political science, with his major impact being on election studies.  In his 1955 article A Theory of Critical Elections, Key explained how the Republican Party became dominant between 1860 and 1932; and then how this dominance shifted to the Democratic Party  after 1932 by using empirical evidence to identify a number of election which Key termed as â€Å"critical,† or â€Å"realigning† which resulted in American voters changing their political party affiliations. While Key specifically starts with 1860 which was the year that Abraham Lincoln was elected, other scholars and political scientists have identified and/or recognized that there have been systematic patterns or cycles which have regularly taken place in the U.S. national elections.  Ã‚  While these scholars are not in agreement as to the duration of these patterns: periods that range from every 30 to 36 years as opposed to 50 to 60 years; it does appear that the patterns have some relationship with generational change. Election of 1800 The earliest election which scholars have identified as realigning was in 1800 when Thomas Jefferson defeated the incumbent John Adams. This election transferred power from George Washington and Alexander Hamilton’s Federalist Party to the Democratic-Republican Party which was led by Jefferson. Although some argue that this was the birth of the Democratic Party, in reality, the party was established in 1828 with the election of Andrew Jackson. Jackson defeated the incumbent, John Quincy Adams and resulted in the Southern States taking power from the original New England colonies. Election of 1860 As stated above, Key explained how the Republican Party became dominant starting in 1860 with the election of Lincoln. Although Lincoln was a member of the Whig Party during his early political career, as President he led the U.S. to abolish slavery as a member of the Republic Party. In addition, Lincoln and the Republic Party brought nationalism to the United States on the eve of what would become the American Civil War. Election of 1896 The overbuilding of railroads caused several of them, including the Reading Railroad, to go into receivership which caused hundreds of banks to fail; resulting in what was the first U.S. economic depression and is known as the Panic of 1893. This depression caused soup lines and public ire towards the present administration and made the Populist Party the favorite to take power in the 1896 Presidential election. In the 1896 Presidential election, William McKinley defeated William Jennings Bryan and while this election was not a true realignment or did it even meet the definition of a critical election; it did set the stage for how candidates would campaign for office in subsequent years. Bryan had been nominated by both the Populist and Democratic parties. He was opposed by the Republican McKinley who was backed by a very wealthy individual who used that wealth to conduct a campaign that was intended to make the populace fearful of what would happen if Bryan won. On the other hand, Bryan used the railroad to make a whistle-stop  tour giving twenty to thirty speeches daily.  These campaign methods have evolved into the modern day. Election of 1932 The 1932 election is widely considered as the most well-known realignment election in U.S. history. The country was in the middle of the Great Depression as a result of the 1929 Wall Street Crash. Democratic candidate Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his New Deal policies overwhelmingly defeated incumbent Herbert Hoover by a margin of 472 to 59 Electoral Vote. This critical election was the underpinnings of a massive overhaul of American politics.  In addition, it changed the face of the Democratic Party.   Election of 1980 The next critical election occurred in 1980 when Republican challenger Ronald Reagan defeated the Democratic incumbent Jimmy Carter by the tremendous margin of 489 to 49 Electoral Votes. At the time, approximately 60 American’s had been held hostage since November 4, 1979, after the U.S. Embassy in Tehran had been overrun by Iranian students. The Reagan election also marked a realignment of the Republican Party to being more conservative than ever before and also brought about Reaganomics which was designed to fix severe economic issues that confronted the country.  In 1980, the Republicans also took control of the Senate, which marked the first time since 1954 that they had control of either house of Congress. (It would not be until 1994 before the Republican Party would have control of both the Senate and the House simultaneously.) Election of 2016 – Realigning Election? The real question with respect as to whether the 2016 election victory by Trump is a â€Å"political realignment† and/or a â€Å"critical election† is not easy to answer a week after the election.  The United States is not experiencing internal financial distress or facing negative economic indicators such as high unemployment, inflation, or increasing interest rates. The country is not at war, although there are threats of foreign terrorism and social unrest due to racial issues.  However, it does not appear that these were major issues or concerns during this election process.   Instead, one could argue that neither Clinton or Trump were viewed by voters as being â€Å"Presidential† due to their own ethical and moral issues.  In addition, since lack of honesty was a major hurdle which Clinton attempted to overcome throughout the campaign, it is quite plausible that out of fear of what Clinton would do if elected, voters chose to give the Republicans control of both houses of Congress.

Advantages and disadvantages of on-line shopping Dissertation

Advantages and disadvantages of on-line shopping - Dissertation Example Branding might cause a person to shop on-line because that person is looking for specific brands that might not be available in stores. On the other hand, branding might work to encourage people to shop high street shops, because these shops do a more effective job of branding then do on-line stores. Therefore, it is necessary to examine what branding is. Branding began with the modern age. Modern consumption is also driven by the choices that were being offered in modern society, choices that were not offered in earlier societies, before mass production of goods became the norm. This mass production had a side effect as well, one that would influence the post-modern individual’s obsession with labels and designers – branding became essential, as there were so many goods flooding the market, that companies needed to distinguish their goods from the multitude of other goods that were coming into existence. According to Naomi Klein, this led to competitive branding and, u ltimately, to the rise of designer labels, such as Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. Because brands are essentially the same – Coke is not really that much different from Pepsi, Reebok is not much different than Nike, Apples are not appreciably different from PCs – companies must find a way to differentiate themselves from their competitors. Goldman & Papson argue that this has led to a rather cluttered landscape for the world of advertising, as each brand tries to get a leg up on their competitors by branding themselves as somehow different from the rest. One way is by attacking and counterattacking – such as when MCI named AT&T in their advertisements for friends and family, thereby gaining market share away from AT&T, AT&T went on the defensive, deriding MCI's friends and family program as a â€Å"manipulator of personal relations† because the program involved giving MCI a person's information without that person's knowledge. Another way is by showing wha t a product is not – such as when Pringle's potato chips transposed an image of their light chip with that of a guy eating greasy chips that dripped on his shirt (Goldman & Pappas, 1996). Because brands have a hard time saying that their product is better than the other guys, they instead seek to raise their symbolic image value – LL Bean's flannel shirts may be the same in quality as Wal-Mart's, but the image of wearing an LL Bean's shirt makes the value more than Wal-Mart. It is all about the image that has been carefully cultivated in the advertisements for these brands, where the product and the image coming together is known as a â€Å"commodity sign†. This is what is meant when somebody says that one is â€Å"paying for the name† (Goldman & Pappas, 1996). Identity became a construct of consumption, in that people, both men and women, started using consumption not as a way to express one's identity, but to construct it - â€Å"brands are how we figu re out who we are.†(Kacen, 2000). This reflects the fluidity of an individual's identity, and reflects that gender identity is also a fluid concept, as opposed to a fixed attribute (Kacen, 2000). Part of this was made possible by the Nikes and Tommy Hilfigers of the world who are not just selling products, but the image that their brand connotes. Therefore, mere manufacturing has been replaced by marketing (Klein, 2000). Price discounting may to differentiate one’s brand from other brands because of the problem of brand similarity. There is some indication that price discounting may actually hurt a store’s image and the brand image, and that it might not build sales (Grewal et al., 1998). Therefore, whether or not it actually works depends on other factors. One factor is known as the perceived discount. According

What do you understand by the phrase 'moral panic' Please Essay - 1

What do you understand by the phrase 'moral panic' Please refer to at least one contemporary example which illustrates how the media can be said to be responsible for creating moral panics - Essay Example ese institutions majorly use literature among the very many medium that exist to pass down morals from one generation to another.Going through the human history of literature, plenty of fictional stories, for example, the Goosebumps (Blaine, 2008). These stories served as an avenue of entertainment but also as a source of morals because they informed, improved, and instructed their readership or audience (Butts, 2006), for example, the novels by Dickens Charles, over the years have been a great source of morality. This is because Charles Dickens has extensively written on the various social and economic ills that face the society. Charles Dickens, in his book, David Copperfield talks extensively on the economic and social ills of the society (Dickens, 1899). In children’s literature, the concept of morality is widely depicted. For instance in storytelling, teachers are always concerned with the morality of the story. Literature has been widely used for purposes of explaining and imparting the concepts of morality in an individual (Butts, 2006). The concept of morality is more common in the literature of children. Literature books and stories are therefore a great source of moral teachings. Panic on the other hand is the sudden feeling of fear that is usually very great at particular instances that it replaces reasonable thinking with overwhelming agitation as well as anxiety (clarke, 2002). Panic might be experienced by an individual or get experienced by a group of people all at once at times referred to as panic of the mass or mass panic (Kenneth, 2006). Panic dates back, way back, and man over the years has deduced means of using panic to his advantage. It is believed that men used panic during the pre-historic period to hunt animals for food (Clarke, 2006). For example, pre-historic man would make weird sounds by blowing horns and would use this to direct herds to cliff edges and the animals would jump to their deaths or cripple themselves making it easy

Tourism in 21st Century

Tourism in 21st Century Tourism in the face of 21st centurys challenges. 1. Introduction It is difficult to pin-point in a short publication all the problems which will determine the direction of tourisms development in the twenty-first century. This difficulty results from dynamic transformations which are in our modern civilisation. Twenty years ago in his book entitled „The Third Wave†, A. Toffler wrote that humanity will stand in the face of new challenges, and it appears that these processes are in the future. According to the author the title „The Third Wave†, like the previous two indicate, „will squeeze out previous cultures and civilisations bringing its morals into effect, which was inconceivable for people who had been born earlier†1. The speed of our everyday life was considerably slower, as the first wave, the agricultural revolution, needed one thousand years to run its course. The Industrial revolution, or the second wave, needed only three hundred years from the beginning to the end. However, these prior transformations are incomparable to the speed and progress of our modern civilisation. This third wave has been dubbed the technological revolution and is now in process. Some of the more visible processes in our modern life include; the quick development of the technology, the revolution in genetics, the conquest of outerspace, the rapid development of cities, and the changes in our jobs and lifestyles. With this information we can state that A. Toffler was correct in saying „The third wave will burst into history within a few decades time. Thus we will feel the effects of the third wave in our lifetime†2. Tofflers vision of radical changes in economics accompanied by worldviews of new â€Å"liberal opportunities† will create the disintegration of the industrial society. Traditional industries will be replaced with new industries based on modern technology, causing transformation between the relationships of our home and work place, working time and free time, and prosperity ve rsus poverty. The meaning of the natural environment will become more important as the world will be seeking new values resulting in changes of cultures and ideologies. Lifestyles and family functions will change, taking on new meaning with concepts such as science, careers, and unemployment. However, the question remains, what impact will these new changes have on tourism? Will tourism use these opportunities, or will it be an enclave in which we can rest from civilisation? Tourism is a dynamic discipline and is affected by these processes previously discussed. The analysis of trends in the modern tourist market show there are many changes suggesting that tourism in the future will differ from present day affairs. The complexity of tourism will bring about many difficulties throughout its development. J. Krippendorf stated, „ it is possible that tourism, an antidote for the industrial world, has become an industry and predacious devourer of the environment†3. The more difficult challenge of the twenty-first century will be the protection of the environment. Fortunately the tourism industry has begun using modern technology in the fields of computer science, communications, and the building of transportation to preserve the environment. The development of tourism is also known to be an asset to social economics, however, there tends to be strong speculations to the overall benefits in this aspect. Toffler A., The Third Wave, Bantam , New York 1981. Toffler A., Trzecia fala [Tlumaczenie E. Woydyllo], Panstwowy Instytut Wydawniczy, Warszawa 1997, p. 44. Ibidem. 2. The Conditions and Prognosis in the Development of Tourism at the Beginning of the 21st Century. Consider the further of tourism and the challenges it will face at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The prognosis is very optimistic as suggested in publicised rapport4. The rapport talks about quick development and states that during the next twenty years tourism will be one of the fasts growing departments in the worlds economy. However, tourism is far from the end of its development, as for now it consists of a small percentage of the worlds citizens. The main hazards in development are problems with the political situation in the world, especially conflicts within the Balkans, the instability of the Arab world, and the disorganisation between authorities and conflict in the former territory of the Soviet Empire. Slightly less hazardous factors deal with economics such as recession and the increase of gas prices. Nevertheless the outlook on tourist development remains optimistic5. The quantitative development of tourism is accompanied by multi-aspects including qualitati ve and structural transformations. The recent geopolitical changes made in different regions of the world has had a great influence on the scale and structure of tourism. The downfall of communism and democratisation of societies in former socialist countries are events which have an impact on modern tourism, and other parts of the world have witnessed similar processes within their societies. The development of international tourism will take on new dynamic and important changes in spatial structures. Generally speaking an increase in share of the tourist structure shows no connection with an increase in share of the profit structure. There is no guarantee of an even distribution in the benefits of tourism. A good example is Africa, which last years shares in total scale of tourist arrivals increased while the total scale of shares in receipts from tourism rapidly decreased. The forecasts about the tourism development are made by using econometric models. So, very important to remember is that a basic variable is time. Therefore, forecasting quick develop of tourism, on a base of fast develop of countries like in nineties is risky. A lot of these countries achieved so-called market maturity. The best opportunities for development of tourism are in areas (e.g. China) where its develop is depended on stabilised political situation, what is very far in the future. We cannot forget about that organisations (e.g.WTO) which make forecasts are not impartial. They have got a good interest in forecasting of increasing tendencies. Some interesting changes in the quality of the tourist market are connected with the supply and demand. These aspects of needs, motivations, and demands lead to new directions in tourist firms. A quick tempo of bringing modern technologies into tourism may herald a real revolution in the organisation of the tourist system. These examples show that tourism, like all repeats of civilisation, odder-go changes and the question remains; what tasks will tourism face in the beginning of the new century? There are many factors which will shape the future of the tourist market and it should be noted that some are out of the control of the market. In an attempt to answer some of these questions there must be an analysis of the trends involved with tourism. Some of the more important conditions in the development of the tourist system with the influence of some components are presented in the figure 1. Figure 1. Forces of change in the tourist system. Source: Cooper Ch., Fletscher J., Gilbert D., Wanhill., Tourism Principles Practice, Pitman Piblishing, Surrey 1993, p. 266. The diagram presents two basic groups of factors which will decide about tourism in the twenty-first century. The first group are exterior factors called megatrends. The second group are interior factors connected with the tourist market. Because of the limited frames in this publication the developing megatrends are on table one, while the factors from the second group are in the complex tables. For more convenient analysis they are split into two groups, one concerned with the demand and one the supply. Tables two and three respectively. For example: Travel and Tourisms Economic Perspective A Special Report from The World Travel Tourism Council, WTTC 1995;Tourism 2020 Vision. A New Forecast from the World Tourism Organization. Execxutive Summary, WTO, Madrid 1998;Future Trends in Tourism Executive Summary. Presentation Handout by Karl Obermair, AIT, Stockholm, June 1998. 3. Megatrend Influences on the Tourist Market. The end of the twentieth century was a time of great transformation in all fields of life. There were many fast paced changes throughout social conditions, the economy, and technology, which brought about many transitions within tourism. The constant tendencies to observe and gain knowledge about the markets basic condition are needed to succeed with each activity and the trends within tourism can change quickly. The ability to forecast and stimulate these developmental processes is the key to making the correct decisions for the future. The fluxuation and competition within the tourist market not only requires constant observation and the ability to anticipate change, but also being able to react to the new trend before it becomes the norm. This shows the importance of knowledge in the action of these megatrends, which can be classified into six basic groups; demographics, politics, social and cultural, economics, technology, and ecology. In each of these groups there are positive factors, which will either stimulate or deter the development of tourism, each with variability in strength and effect. These constituents will decide about the dynamics and expansion of tourism with the difficulty being verification. These megatrends, especially demographics, social, cultural, ecology, and technology hold such a strong influence on the maturation of tourism that such events as a political crisis or economic recession (in some regions) would be unable to hinder such progress. Demographic factors, especially: age of societies; tendencies to set up home late; a smaller number of households; a dominant model of family 2+1; increasing number of lonely people; increasing number of childless couples; increasing number of working women. Political factors, especially: changes in Central-West Europe; integration of the European Union; liberalisation of international migrations; convenience passports, foreign currency; unstable political situation in many regions of the world; international terrorism; increased importance of safe travel Social cultural factors, especially: shortened time of working, more free time and longer vacations; increase of time for additional work; earlier retirements; increasing number of two-income households; which were thought of as a healthy life; a family crisis; conflicts between identity and modernisation, especially in developing countries a radical demands and increases of importance of ethnic movement etc. Economical factors, especially: continuation of moderate economical increase in the world scale; a bigger disproportion between rich and poor countries; a bigger financial crisis in a number of countries (especially, among â€Å"economical tigers in South Asia and Pacific); a stable price of petroleum; liberalisation and development of an international trade; capital concentration in worlds economy; globalisation of economical activity; Technological factors, especially: automation and computerisation; developing of telecommunication developing of computing systems; developing of transport and infrastructure (airports, motorways); Ecological factors, especially: smaller environmental resources a greater ecological awareness in society; governments concern with environment; conflicts causes by developing of a big agglomerations ( in developing and use of modern technologies in everyday life (household articles, sport, tourist equipment); developing of soft technologies; developed countries ); development of the ecological movement international collaboration in field of natural and cultural environment protection; 4. The Main Trends in Tourist Demands There are many interesting publications about change within the field of tourist demands and many studies, which analyse the direction of these changes in development, have been publicised recently. The majorities are unanimous regarding the expansion and direction on the transformations of demands, so much so that there is even an accepted concept known as â€Å"Hard and Soft Tourism†. It is based on the observational changes within the sphere of former and actual clients in travel agencies and set the standard characteristics of two opposite kinds of tourism: the traditional tourist and the modern tourist. These are presented in table 2. Table .2. Tourist demand changes. Conception of â€Å"Hard Soft Tourism. Hard Tourism. Characteristic of so far tourism† Soft Tourism Characteristic of future tourism† Package tours; Individual travelling ; A lot of time, short-term residences; A lot of time, long-term residences Model of one big travel during holidays; Model of two shorter travels during a year Everything organised earlier from a to z (sights, a route, program etc.); Program decisions made individually and spontaneously; Comfort and passivity; An activity and effort; Expectation of number of travels and attractions; Expectation of new experiences and higher quality; Sense of superiority, demonstration effect; Respect and relationship with hostess; Lack of knowledge about attractions, culture and tradition in visiting areas; Knowledge about countries we want to visit; Imported life style and behaviour; Lifestyle following to an example of local population Purchases; Gifts Noise; Silence; Freely available souvenirs (e.g. a mass production of Eiffel Tower figurines; Individual souvenirs (e.g. photo and picture took individually, private video film) Lack of interest in language of visiting country; Studying local language (at least a few words); Fast transport and frequent moves; Less importance of moving speed; Curiosity; Tact; Expectation of comfort; Comfort is not essential; A distance between client and tourist staff; A good relationship with tourist staff; Source: Ostrowski S., Josta Krippendorfa wolanie o nowa swiatowa polityke turystyczna, in: Problemy Turystyki Nr 3, Instytut Turystyki, Warszawa 1983, p. 146.   In table three there is a vision of which tourism will dominate the future, characterised by a more active tourist and less interest in passive tourism. The prediction is that traditional tourism, refereed to as 3 X S (sun sea and sand) will be squeezed out by tourism based on a new formula involving 3 X E (entertainment, excitement, and education). During recent years there has become intensified interest in travelling to historical cities, the so-called green tourist with additional concern for a tendency in business tourism. Nevertheless it could be halted through the development of telecommunications and shorter but more frequent trips consisting of sightseeing and holiday could become more popular. The useful system of â€Å"bridges† between a national holiday leading to the extension of weekends has brought about a prognosis for a renaissance in national tourism. V.T.C. Middleton claimed that for tourists, who quite often may be ‘experienced, a trend in national to urism may become more attractive now then ever, including the sixties. The smaller interest in international tourism is in the neighbouring countries, or places where many Europeans have had vacation. In 1990 European travel represented about seven percent of all international travel, although this number was up to about ten percent in 1996, and Europeans are not the only ones concerned with these numbers. A poll conducted recently by the Travel Trade Gazette concerning international tourism showed these tendencies in change also pointed to the tourist industry representatives. One director of a travel agency was quoted saying ‘a person who was in Spain ten years ago at present is probably in Penang†6. The quick increase in numbers of individual trips along with package tours is the prediction of the future. Today Individuality has a strong influence on cars, clothes and other daily needs as well, and the gaining interest of individual travel is one of the most important tendencies in todays tourist demands. 6. Conclusion The evolution and transformations in tourism during the last one hundred years must be considered one of the most interesting processes in the recent history of humanity. The changes and evolution of the tourist in the next three decades of the twenty-first century are presented in a table which was made by H.Kahn almost a quarter of a century ago. This shows the unfolding of tourism as we see it today and as the table shows it is gaining momentum.

Effective Classroom Management Plan Essay

Teaching is considered as one of the most exciting and challenging professions (Walden University 2009). It is through teaching that everyone is able to learn the things that they needed for their jobs. Everyone can not be a professional without the people who have the ability to teach. During teaching process, teachers usually experience the pressure when dealing with students who have different cultures, behaviors and attitudes. Therefore, an appropriate teaching plan is necessary to address these differences and to prevent the pressure which can hinder the teacher’s performance. Through a right plan and use of resources, teachers are able to make most out of everything and prepare the students towards their future (Bosch 2006). Classroom is considered as the most important place for both teachers and students. It is the place where students and teachers freely exchange ideas and learn from each other. Â  I believe that an appropriate and effective classroom planning is critical in teaching because it aids in imparting knowledge by making the teachers prepared, confident and comfortable with their profession (Bosch 2006). For me, an effective classroom management planning is not only about establishing rules, rewards and consequences but it is also about the establishment of a mutual relationship between the teacher and the students. If a healthy atmosphere is present, then the teacher will not experience difficulty in teaching and students will learn more. In addition, the learning process is student centered (Walden University 2009). This means that learning is imparted through the application of the things learned through classroom activities and tasks. Rules, consequences and rewards are there to guide the students on proper behavior and etiquette but they are not limited to what is written. It is through the real happenings that rules are applied and exercised by the students. In the end teachers are there to guide the students not only in learning but also in correct behavioral decision making.

The Cell Cycle

The cell cycle is a sequence of events in the life of a cell, including cell division. Cell division distributes identical sets of chromosomes to daughter cells. This process is used for reproduction, growth, and repair in the body. The cell cycle can be broken down into two parts: interphase and the mitotic (M) phase. Interphase, a growth period, alternates with mitosis and accounts for 90 percent of the cell cycle. During interphase, the cell grows, duplicates its DNA, and prepares for mitosis. This phase can be broken down into 3 sub phases: G1, S, and G2. During the G1 or first gap phase, the cell grows and performs normal metabolic roles, including producing proteins and organelles. During the S phase, which stands for synthesis of DNA, the cell’s chromosomes are copied. Lastly, in the G2 phase, the cell continues to grow and prepares for cell division. This phase of the cell cycle is regulated by stop and go signals called checkpoints, which are located between G1 and S, G2 and M, and M and G1. These make sure that the cell cycle can proceed and is being performed correctly. The hallmark of this phase is that the DNA appears as loosely packed chromatin and the centrioles are together. Centrioles play an important role in animal cell division. They are composed of microtubules which become spindle fibers that guide the movement of chromosomes in mitosis. Mitosis is the division of the nucleus, which accounts for only 10 percent of the cell cycle. Mitosis can be broken down into five sub phases: prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase; cytokinesis takes place last. In prophase, the chromatin condenses to chromosomes and the two sister chromatid are joined at the centromere. As the centrioles begin to separate, the mitotic spindle, made of microtubules, begins to form and the nucleolus disappears. In prometaphase, the nuclear membrane dissolves, which allows the spindle to interact with the chromosomes, although the spindle isn’t fully formed yet. The sister chromatids of the chromosomes develop proteins within the centromeres called kinetochores. These allow the chromosomes to attach to the microtubules of the spindle, which are called kinetochore microtubules. Nonkinetochore microtubules aren’t connected to chromosomes, but they interact with other microtubules rom the other pole of the cell. By metaphase, the centrioles are at the opposite poles of the cell and the spindle is fully formed. The chromosomes, attached to the spindle, move to the middle of the cell and line up at the imaginary metaphase plate. Anaphase begins when the centromeres of the chromosomes split and the chromatid is now a chromosome. The chromosomes begin to move to ward the opposite poles of the cell and the poles move farther apart. In telophase, two daughter nuclei form at the poles of the cell, the nucleolus and nuclear membrane reappears, and the chromosomes unravel. Cytokinesis, the splitting of the cytoplasm, occurs simultaneously as telophase. Two daughter cells appear by the creation of a cleavage furrow, which pinches the cell in two. After mitosis, the cell can grow and mature to divide again like epithelial, blood, and stem cells, or grow and mature to never divide again like brain, nerve, and muscle cells. These cells go to the G0 phase, a non-dividing resting period. Liver cells can be called back from the G0 phase to divide again, which makes the liver the only organ to regenerate. This demonstrates the importance of the cell cycle.

Broken Dreams and Fallen Themes the Corruption of the...

Broken Dreams and Fallen Themes In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald employs the use of characters, themes, and symbolism to convey the idea of the American Dream and its corruption through the aspects of wealth, family, and status. In regards to wealth and success, Fitzgerald makes clear the growing corruption of the American Dream by using Gatsby himself as a symbol for the corrupted dream throughout the text. In addition, when portraying the family the characters in Great Gatsby are used to expose the corruption growing in the family system present in the novel. Creativity Self Test - Business Improvement Strategies Essay

Essays on Creativity Self Test - Business Improvement Strategies Essay The paper â€Å"Creativity Self Test - Business Improvement Strategies" is a breathtaking variant of an essay on management. The creativity aspect is a salient feature in my talent pool. I strongly concur that it is a consistent part of how I undertake my daily duties and responsibilities. I have since mastered a set of creativity skills since I was in middle school which I apply constantly. This has been made possible through learning and implementing advanced creativity techniques with time. With creativity, I have gained in-depth knowledge of areas of my work that demands creativity. I am receptive to team creativity and challenges influencing my way of thinking and equal sharing of rewards. I also like seeing my creative idea from conception to application stage and being aware of my creative uniqueness I apply on a constant basis. However, I am not sure whether time constraints impede creativity at my workplace. My position and role in the organization influence my participatio n and implementation of these ideas since our functional structure limits the inception of ideas by middle-level staff.According to the rating in the appendix section, the score is 85 which means that I am very creative. It is true that highly creative in response to the challenges I encounter, as opposed to it being a skill naturally used in every part of my life. I work at a stock exchange requiring creativity and flexibility in harnessing gains from stocks. I have employed creative skills in my previous assignments like developing a pork breakfast gadget that tells the owner that it is time to wake up. Waking up is a challenge to many people especially in a chilly morning or after a strenuous day. The solution to that problem was developing a gadget that is less costly, reliable and beneficial to many people. The idea was initially thought but brainstorming with colleagues became a broad concept worth trying. Since I have developed many ideas before but failed to take to the impl ementation level, I grew restless in ensuring this excellent idea succeeds. The skills have been part of me and this has made it possible to persuade financiers to fund the project.Brainstorming as an idea creation technique has also assisted in determining whether the given idea was new and feasible. I believe in coming up with incremental and radical concepts. For instance, two years ago, while on an assignment to reduce losses as the stocks department, came up with speculation software that detects levels of risk and turbulence of shares and stocks. Being a junior employee in the company, I was constrained from ensuring the idea materialized. I was able to convince the section head to consider this idea as it would reduce administration costs and increase profits. My mastery of creativity was not hindered by time limitations as I took about six months to convince the manager on the importance of integrating creative works to innovativeness in business. I think I am naturally crea tive and responsive. I admire innovative ideas that have been developed and implemented. I always communicate my ideas effectively by letting others know the wider need and solutions to common problems. I am open to diverse and new dimensions. In the case of Stocks Speculation software, I incorporated my team and was happy to learn of their positive feedback.

Speech In Favor Capital Punishment - 1282 Words

Speech In Favour Of Capital Punishment Capital Punishment is the lawful infliction of death and has been used in Britain since the 5the century. It was not until 1964 that capital punishment was abolished and this has been described by many historians as Britains worst decision in over 500 years. Along with these Historians, I also believe that our country was much better off with the death penalty as a punishment for sick and twisted people, murderers, rapists and peadophiles. Did you know for instance that in 2003 there were 1048 murders and 172 attributed to one man. . . Harold Shipman. Whistleblowers and the False Claims Act 2012

Question: Describe about the Whistleblowers and the False Claims Act 2012 ? Answer: Key characteristics of whistleblower The whistleblowers are the range of employees present internally and externally in the organisation who takes the responsibility of reporting any misconduct of the supervisors to the other related parties. The number of whistleblowers is decreasing in the public sector organisations. Hence to increase the instances of whistleblowing and reduce the instances of fraudulent activities, the SEC has introduced the award payout system for the whistleblowers within the public sector (Welsh Bayliss, 2012). As per the reports of The Guardian, last year in April 2014, a heart specialist doctor serving at the Walsgrave Hospital in Coventry and a member of the NHS Trust, publicly aired his concerns about the lack of care and rising number of patient deaths in the hospitals. The Whistleblowing doctor expressed his concerns about the lack of post-operative care in NHS and Walsgrave and the concern over the patient safety and overcrowding of patient beds leading to death caused by congestion and breathing problems. As a result, of the Whistleblowing, the doctor was dismissed from NHS trust and hospital services (Campbell, 2014). However, as an effect of the whistleblowing, the Commission for Health Improvement and the NHS trust evaluated the existing operations in the hospitals and were bound to support the actions of the doctor. The allegations and dismissal of the hospital authorities against the doctor cost the hospital 6 million of the public fund (Meese, 2012). Justification of whistle blowing The analysis of the above case shows that the whistleblower was completely justified in his approach of highlighting the issues prevailing within the hospital premises. In the recent case of the reporting by the whistleblowing doctors, the hospital faced the death of two patients due to the lack of post-operative care and congestions of beds leading to inappropriate health conditions. In this case, the doctor was rightful in his approach to notifying the concerns publicly. As per the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act 2005, all hospitals should adopt care and maintain quality services in their conduct of treating the patients within the hospital premises. Kestenbaum, (2012) stated that whistleblowing is important in case of healthcare organisations because, the lack of whistleblowing within the healthcare will result in increased level of corruption that will finally result in the reduction of the dignity and health of the patients in the healthcare organisation. Thus, protec ting the patients from harm and ensuring the dignity of the care, an open and transparent culture should be maintained within the healthcare organisations. Protection under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, which is commonly known as the Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Protection Act sets out the legislations for the employees of the public limited companies who provide evidence of fraud to the public about the organisation. Section 806 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act provides the legislations for the protection of the whistleblowers in the public limited companies. Section 1514A of the act further provides the legislations for the civil protection to the employees against their retaliations. The provisions of Section 1514A state that the publicly traded companies cannot dismiss suspend, harass, discharge or demote a whistleblower (Campbell, 2014). For being eligible under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act 2002, the whistleblowers must fulfil the following conditions: The whistleblower should be an employee of a publicly traded company registered under the section 12 of the Securities Exchange Act 1934 The whistleblower must have complained about a senior employee within the organisation believing that a violation of any rule or regulation of the SEC has taken place (Lopez, 2013) The whistleblower can also complain about the grounds of any violation of federal and criminal provisions relating to banks, emails or wire fraud Sarbanes-Oxley Act specifies that whistleblower complaints should be legally made confidential and anonymous so that the company officials should not have any information about the employee who has complained about the supervisors and organisational policies. The incorporation of this legislation further helps the whistleblowers within the organisation to avoid any mistreatments from the employers. Further section 806 of the act states that if the whistleblower is mistreated within the organisation, then the employee may file a complaint with the Department of Labour within 90 days of the mistreatment. If the complaint of the employee against the mistreatment of the organisation becomes successful under the act, then the employee is entitled to receive monetary compensations, reinstatement and damage compensation from the management of the organisation. In the given case, a doctor is also entitled to receive monetary compensation from NHS trust funds for bullying and dismissing the d octor from his services (Azlin Farhat, 2012). Nosferatu Opening sequence Essay Example

Nosferatu Opening sequence Paper F.W Murnaus film Nosferatu starts off with an eerie title sequence, the background is black with green writing and a symphony of horrors is playing in the background. This allows the audience to immediately recognize what type of genre the film is going to be, as black is commonly associated with dark or evil and green is linked with something quite sinister or often monster like. Its also helps build atmosphere. As does the beating in the music, as it increases it resembles a heart beat (something which you would expect from a horror film) When the first page of writing appears it is in a book, this makes it seem like someone is retelling a story. And the gothic style of writing gives another hint to the genre of the film. The first actual shot is an establishing shot of the small town, as though the audience is looking into someones life. The Irish shot lets the audience focus on that particular part or in another case could be used to make you feel claustrophobic as though you cannot see the whole picture. In the foreground is a church, this is usually a symbol of stability and order in society this sets up the fact that this is when the film is in equilibrium. In the opening sequence the music is light hearted and jolly, this makes the audience aware nothing shocking will happen (yet) and feel comfort at this particular point. Later on whilst knock is reading the letter he was sent from the Count the music becomes more threatening. This very effectively puts the audience on edge. Another key factor in Nosferatu is the colour tint in each scene, Yellow represents daylight and ideologically is an indicator that all is well at this time. In Nosferatu the yellowish colour appears mostly alongside the light hearted music for example whilst Hutter is getting ready in the morning and greeting his wife. During the same scene Hutter gives his wife some flowers, yet she is upset because he has killed the beautiful flowers and cut them off from their life source. This is an important thing to take notice of because the flowers are dead and that may also be her fait. Mena (the wife) is dressed in pale clothing; this highlights her innocence and weakness. Also it makes her a target for the Count. (As in many Vampire films) The next scene when Knock is reading his letter from the Count, it can be observed that a skull and cross bones appears on it, this is a sure symbol of bad and might be the starting point to the disequilibrium because it introduces the idea of the Count coming to the town. And in this particular shot, F.W Murnau positions Knock higher than Hutter to show that he is superior to him, ideologically knock has the power to use Hutter to lure victims to the count. Nosferatu was made at the time of the 1st world war; this is significant to the content of the film because Murnau would have included things naturally as it was real to him. For example he saw a lot of active duty during the war. Secondly which comes later in Nosferatu, the plague is thought to be the cause of the sudden deaths in the town that have occurred recently and in real life at the time there was a disease about called Typhoid which could be linked to him using this idea in the film.
