In society there is much pressure to be a part of the herd. Occasionally, a few people blush along that try to tell people to be themselves and consider for themselves. The film Dead Poets Society illustrates this idea through diaphanous characters and situations. The story takes place in 1959 at Welton Academy, a reclusive college prep school for boys where discipline is the most important shoe involvers last and any demonstration of a free thought is strictly prohibited. Mr. Keating is the one voice that stands out among the narrow-minded administration, even though he is an eccentric yet inspiring teacher. Mr. Keating wants his students to suck the overdress up of life to the marrow, to seize the day, and to grow their lives extraordinary. He wants his students to be individuals and not what the school wants them to be. He in like manner wants his students to put one across this individuality to their everyday lives and not allow society to specify what they are. Its difficult for people to make their birth path and be an individual when they are be told to conform and be alike everyone else. Mr. Keating was the one person in the school that was challenging the children to be individuals and not conform. Mr. Keating was being a non-conformist, while at the similar time, attempting to make others follow his example.
This was understandably seen in the scene where he took them all out into the courtyard and told them to start walking. The point of this was to stage that after walking for a little while, everyone started walking the alike way. He wanted to fork out them how difficult it is to maintain your accep! t beliefs when everyone else is doing something different than you. Then he told them all to walk their own way and wanted them to know that is how they should live their lives.
